On the 15 th November, The Telegraph reported that Russian interference over the past year has included attacks on the UK media, Telecoms and energy sectors, including a hack in June 2017 on the day of the General Election. Since the Kaspersky news broke, the UK National Cyber Security Centre has confirmed this as a “cause for concern” and predicted that Russia has the intent to target the UK Government and the UK’s critical national infrastructure,” They have also advised that Russian based anti virus solutions should not be chosen. Russia has already been accused for originating several Malware strains including WannaCry that caused mass disruption in the NHS earlier this year and the Petya Malware strain which infected several businesses across the world. This means that the Malware data picked up for analysis could easily find its way into the hands of Russian hackers.
